This year’s Memorial Day Parade will begin at a different place, as the Padanaram Bridge will still be under construction, causing a change in the parade’s usual procession.

Here is what the parade will look like this year, according to Veterans Agent Roy Oliveira.

Normally the parade begins its procession at Apponagansett Park, but due to continued causeway construction it will start at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church at 783 Dartmouth St. instead.

Once the procession reaches Bridge and Elm those participating in or watching the wreath laying ceremony will depart from the parade to throw the wreath in the water. Usually the ceremony is held on the causeway where the bridge crests. Involved in this portion of event are the Dartmouth Police and VFW honor guards and several other people. Once finished the group will proceed back to the rest of the group.

The other stop the parade procession makes is at the cemetery on Elm Street, where they will hold several ceremonial moments. They will lower the flag, do another wreath presentation and Oliveira and a pastor will say a few words. Also either the high school or middle school band will perform the National Anthem and then taps will play again before everyone joins back up together.

The last stop on the route is at the old Police Station where the flag will be lowered there again. There will be a wreath presentation at the rock memorial and Miss Bristol County, Alyssa Maitoza, will sing the National Anthem. This is also the part of the ceremony where the names of those who have while fighting are read and the poem “Freedom is Not Free” is read.

Oliveira said he’s holding out hope this years Memorial Day parade will actually happen. For the past two years weather has caused it to be canceled.
