Friends Academy and the Zeiterion Theater teaming up for veteran events

May 21, 2018

Friends Academy’s Encompass Community and the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center are teaming up for a series of events spotlighting veterans and the redemptive power of storytelling.

On June 1, the Zeiterion Theater will host a free showing of the movie Almost Sunrise at its New Bedford location. The film chronicles the lives of two Iraq War veterans as they return from war with a “moral injury.” Fearful of succumbing to depression, the pair embarked on a 2,700 mile journey across America, which is detailed in the film.

On June 2, Friends Academy will host a contemplative walk and guided meditation session in the forests of its Tucker Road campus beginning at 10 a.m.

The walk will be led by Tom Voss, one of the veterans featured in Almost Sunrise, and Michael Collins, who directed the documentary. They will share their thoughts on the restorative and soul-nourishing benefits of nature.

The events are free and open to the public. Walkers should meet in the Friends Academy parking lot at its 1088 Tucker Road campus. To RSVP, visit zeiterion.org/almost-sunrise or call The Zeiterion’s box office at 508-994-2900.

In advance of the events, organizers are seeking simple letters or pictures thanking veterans for their service to line the walking trails with. Letters or photos to include can be dropped off or sent by mail to Friends Academy, 1088 Tucker Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747.
