The Dartmouth Police Department now has a new deputy chief.

Capt. James Storey was promoted to the post with a unanimous vote at the June 4 Select Board meeting. The appointment comes several months after Brian Levesque, the department’s previous deputy chief, was promoted to acting chief. In February, he was named the department’s permanent chief.

Storey’s appointment is contingent upon successful contract negotiations.

During the meeting, Chief Levesque praised Storey’s experience and qualifications. Storey began in Dartmouth in 1994 as a dispatcher, and in 1998 a patrolman. He was most recently appointed captain in 2017, and holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He served in the U.S. Navy on submarines before joining the force.

“I can say with confidence Capt. Storey demonstrated his ability to handle the demands of a job which, at times, can be exceptional,” Levesque said.

The Select Board also voted to promote Det. Frank Oliveira to the supervisory opening created by Storey’s promotion.

He has 15 years of experience in the department, has served as detective for eight years, and is currently the department’s court liaison. He holds an associate's degree in criminal justice and is pursuing a bachelor's degree.
