Fall River Fire official gets probation for OUI

Feb 27, 2019

Ambrose Smith, the Fall River District Fire Chief and South Dartmouth Resident, who was arrested on Jan. 11 for drunk driving, will face probation.

According to the State Police arrest report, Smith led police on a chase — with no tires on his front wheels — from I-195 East to Faunce Corner Mall Road and the cemetery on Old Westport Road before being blocked in on Rt. 6 by police. Smith failed a field sobriety test and refused a breath test.

Smith was initially charged with a marked lanes violation, failure to stop or yield, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and operating under the influence of liquor.

In court on January 17, Smith was found not responsible for a marked lines violation and failure to stop or yield. He admitted sufficient facts on the charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle and operating under the influence of liquor, but both charges were continued without a finding until Jan. 16, 2020.

The charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop for police were dismissed at the request of the Commonwealth.

Smith’s drivers license was suspended for 45 days, and he was placed on probation for one year. He was also required to pay $665 in fees.
