Make your voice heard at upcoming fire district meetings

May 2, 2019

All three of Dartmouth’s fire districts will hold annual meetings in the coming weeks to approve new budgets and other items.

The annual meetings are held once a year. Registered voters may attend the meeting of their home district. Voters can weigh in on the budget by voting via a show of hands.

Fire District No. 1’s annual meeting will be held at the 10 Bridge Street fire station on May 8, 6:30 p.m. District No. 2’s meeting is on May 13 at 7 p.m. at the 1100 Russells Mills Road station. District No. 3’s meeting is on May 6 at 7 p.m. at the 140 Cross Road station.

Fire District No. 1 voters will be asked to approve a host of budget items for the district’s 2020 budget, including pay rates for firefighters, district officials — including $95,000 for the district’s fire chief — and part-time firefighter personnel.

Several big-ticket purchases are also being proposed. The district is seeking approval to spend $70,000 to buy a new 4x4 pick-up truck to replace a 2007 Chevy Tahoe, $45,000 for a new generator, and $55,700 to buy a vent system to meet OSHA requirements.

Also on the docket is a request to spend $10,000 to repair the Old Fire Station on Bridge Street. The building was previously owned by the town and was in use as storage for youth sports leagues.

District No. 2 voters will be asked to approve a $798,841 budget. That is up from last year’s $756,658 budget. Included in the budget is compensation for district officials, firefighters, general expenses and operational expenses, loan payments, and reserve and stabilization funding.

In Fire District No. 3’s annual meeting, voters will be asked to approve a $3.37 million budget. Items include compensation for district officials, firefighters, bond payments for the fire station, and a request to increase the private fire watch detail cost from $35 to $40 per hour.  The district is also seeking to spend $50,000 on capital improvements.
