Dartmouth is under a tropical storm warning, with Elsa expected to pass over the region as a tropical storm Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning means that tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. 

The brunt of the rain and wind should be felt from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. During that time, the area could see torrential downpours, with as much as 2 to 4 inches of rain in that short time frame. 

Forecasters are reporting that the area could see wind gusts from 35-55 mph in the Dartmouth area, with higher gusts across Cape Cod and the islands.

Significant impacts could be felt from the storm, The National Weather Service reports. 

Rivers and tributaries may quickly become swollen with faster currents and could overspill their banks in a few places, especially in usually vulnerable spots. 

Small streams, creeks, and ditches could overflow. 

Streets and parking lots could take on moving water as storm drains and retention ponds overflow.

Some storm damage, including downed trees, particularly those with shallow roots, is possible, the service reports.
