Dartmouth – Sign up to join the Friends of the Dartmouth Libraries on Tuesday, January 25, from 11 a.m.-noon as Dr. Memory Holloway, art historian and UMass Dartmouth professor emerita, discusses Édouard Manet’s painting, Luncheon on the Grass, in a presentation titled “Dining with Manet: French Pastries & Picnics on the Lawn.”
In 1863, Édouard Manet painted Luncheon on the Grass, a picture of his friends seated on the ground enjoying a picnic. What did they eat? Was this a fantasy – food they longed to eat but could not afford? Dr. Holloway will explore what this painting and another by Monet reveal about 19th century French cooking and the distance between haute cuisine and domestic cuisine.
