UMass Dartmouth mourns loss of baseball player
The UMass Dartmouth community is mourning the loss of sophomore outfielder Wilcar “Willy” Moreno, who died on April 23 after a battle with cancer.
He was 22 years old.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Willy's family, friends, teammates and classmates at this very sad time,” UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller wrote. “Let us remember Willy for his resilient spirit and his love of life and learning.”
Moreno was from the Dominican Republic and played high school baseball at Mt. Pleasant High in Providence, R.I.
Moreno, a business student who was expected to graduate in 2023, played two seasons with the Corsairs before he took a leave of absence this semester due to his diagnosis.
Despite the disease, the 22-year-old remained an active part of the UMass Dartmouth community, Fuller said.
“He cared deeply about his family and also about his teammates, who will remember Willy as someone who was full of joy and positivity,” he wrote. “He will be sorely missed by everyone at UMass Dartmouth.”
Services are being coordinated through Providence Memorial Funeral Home.
A private committal will be held in the Dominican Republic in the future.
