There’s a lot happening in Dartmouth in any given week, here’s what’s coming up.

Friday, Oct. 7

Farmers’ Market offers local produce

The Dartmouth Farmers’ Market will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 on the lawn at St. Mary’s Parish Center, 789 Dartmouth St. 

The market offers locally raised meats and eggs, locally grown produce and flowers and crafted food, handmade goods, crafts and art. Local musicians will perform.

Walk with author Ben Shattuck

Join Dartmouth author Ben Shattuck on Friday, Oct. 7 for a literary walk through Destruction Brook Woods, located on Slades Corner Road.

The walk will be held from 2 to 4 p.m.

During the hike, Shattuck will read from his debut book “Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau” and discuss his ode to the healing powers of nature.

In “Six Walks,” Shattuck brings the relevance of Thoreau right into the present, stoking a greater appreciation for walking as a way to nurture your spirit and a desire to reacquaint yourself with Thoreau’s work himself.

The upcoming walk is part of South Coast Almanac’s Walking Book Tour series, which brings together stories and the South Coast. There is no requirement that participants need to have previously read the book.

Along with trekking through Destruction Brook Woods, there will be an opportunity to sit down with Shattuck at Davoll’s General store, which he is part owner of.

Music and refreshments

Join the Dartmouth Bible Church on Friday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. for the Damascus Road Coffeehouse.

There will be a free Christian concert from Tina Luce. Refreshments will be provided. The church is located at 52 Morton Ave.

Saturday, Oct. 8

Tour the District 3 station

Take a tour of Dartmouth Fire District No. 3's headquarters at an Open House on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The open house, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will include station tours, meet-and-greets with firefighters and Sparky the fire dog, a fire truck bouncy house, the chance to climb a truck and spray a fire hose, and more. 

A demonstration on cooking fires is at 11 a.m. A live fire demo is at 11:30 a.m. Food will be served at 12:15 p.m. 

The station is located at 140 Cross Road.

Wednesday, Oct. 12

Learn about Purple Martins

The Paskamansett Bird Club will be holding a presentation on Purple Martins on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.

The talk will be conducted by Madeleine Linck, who will present an overview of the life history of Purple Martins and report on several Martin colonies close-by in Massachusetts.

Martins east of the Mississippi are unique in that they are colonial breeders almost entirely dependent on humans.

As a wildlife technician for 30 years in Minnesota, Madeleine monitored Martins and Trumpeter Swans as well as reptiles and amphibians. After moving to Rehoboth in 2016 to be closer to grandkids, she began volunteering to manage the Martin colonies in Norfolk and Easton.

This talk will be held in-person at the Smith Neck Friends Meeting House, located at 594 Smith Neck Road, and via Zoom. Those who want to attend online can do so by using Meeting ID 816 7548 6226.
