Dartmouth Pathways Committee offers e-bike tips
The Dartmouth Pathways Committee has compiled tips to keep e-bikes and their batteries in top condition over the winter months.
The first step in properly caring for an e-bike is to consult the instructions provided by the battery manufacturer to ensure environmental conditions are safe for battery storage. Cool, dry locations are optimal for storage.
Second, pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions for maintaining a safe charge while in storage. Lithium ion batteries self-discharge over time and typically need to be recharged at regular intervals over extended periods of storage.
Typically, the charge should be maintained between 30% to 70% while in storage for more than three months.
Failure to maintain an adequate charge can cause the battery to be over-discharged, resulting in a battery that will not accept a charge after storage. This will require an expensive replacement.
Lastly, only use the charger provided by the battery manufacturer and do not leave the battery on the charger beyond the time needed to reach the level of charge required.
