50+ things to do in Dartmouth this summer

May 23, 2017

As Memorial Day and backyard barbecues draw near, so do these post-solstice events that will draw you out of your backyard. Turn up the heat this summer with our weekly Dartmouth guides.

Music

Find live music every week between the Paskamansett Concert Series and the town’s summer concerts. Catch Louis Leeman and Jerilyn Karam-Kozak at the Dartmouth Grange on June 10 at 7:30 p.m., or stop by on the second Saturday of any month for live music. Pack a picnic and kid-friendly beverages for a $15 show ($12 for kids, seniors, and college students; free for toddlers; $35 for families).

For an outdoor concert, head to Apponagansett Park. The weekly, Wednesday night concerts are $5 at the gate ($4 in advance; free for children; $30 for a season pass). This year, Eddie & the Exciters will kick off the summer series on June 14 at 6:30 p.m. While by the water, be sure to grab a campfire s’mores ice-cream cone from the town-operated Gulf Hill Bucket.

Food

The Lloyd Center will host Clambake XXXII, which includes a raw bar, lobster rolls, chowder, top-shelf open bar, live music, and a silent auction, all seaside at Demarest Lloyd State Park. Wear your best disco dress to support the center’s environmental research and education programs. Festivities start at 6 p.m. on July 14. Individual tickets, $175; register online.

The Dartmouth YMCA will host its annual farm-to-table dinner on July 22. The $125 tickets include a lobster or chicken dinner, a bottomless pint glass, and live music. The Black Bass Grille will provide catering.

In September, District No.2 will host its annual clambake at the 1100 Russells Mills Road firehouse. The traditional mix — complete with linguica, hot dogs, sausages, white and sweet potatoes, corn, and clams — cooks over a bed of rockweed for about two hours. District No. 3's yearly pig roast will follow later that month at its 140 Cross Road location.

Carnival

Rockwell Amusements will return to the Dartmouth Mall parking lot, June 7-11. Find a ferris wheel and dough boys.

Fireworks

There are nearby hotspots for celebrating the Fourth of July. Head to downtown New Bedford, or cross the waterway into Fairhaven for views of the sendoff at State Pier.

Kid-friendly

Keep the little ones engaged this summer at the Southworth Library at 732 Dartmouth Street. Families can sign up for a 15-minute read with a dog starting June 26.

Or, bring the books outside. The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust's StoryWalk events run through June 1 at the Ridge Hill Reserve and the Paskamansett Woods. Enter the worlds of authors Lois Ehlert and Nancy Cote as you follow their pages along the self-guided walks.

Dartmouth High School will host the Camp Invention program, June 26-30. Students K-5 will construct spy gadget alarm boxes, launch water rockets, pitch their own duck tape creations to build problem solving and teamwork skills. $250 per student; visit campinvention.org.

Education

Join the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s science fiction-themed book club. The monthly meetings will start on June 13 at noon in the Carney Library. Pick up Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” and email hkraus@umassd.edu with questions.

Fitness

The Lloyd Center holds several outings on the water, including sunset kayak tours (June 22, July 20, August 17, September 11; $50), women’s canoe trips (June 9, July 9, August 7, September 6; $30), and paddleboarding introductions (July 22; $60). Get more information at lloydcenter.org.

Get your yogi on with DNRT at Slocum's River Reserve. The weekly Wednesday classes kick off on July 12 at 8:30 a.m., and are free and open to the public. Bring water, a yoga mat, and bug spray. Visit dnrt.org for more details.

For a higher-intensity workout, sign up for Mass Audubon's Ducky Dash 5K on August 5. The annual run-walk starts at Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary on Horseneck Road and loops out to Gooseberry Island. $20 per runner; register online.

Farmers markets

Enjoy local produce this summer at the Dartmouth Farmers Market. The market opens for the season on June 2 at St. Mary's Parish Center (789 Dartmouth Street).  It will be held every Friday through September 29, from 1-6 p.m. Follow the market's Facebook page for more information.

Find grass-fed meat, honey, veggies, and teas at Round the Bend Farm's 92 Allens Neck Road location. The monthly Open Farm Days continue on June 17, and include family-friendly tours of the property.
