After 12 innings, Indians take first win of the season

In what Dartmouth High baseball Head Coach Michael Frates called the longest baseball game he’s ever witnessed as a coach and player, the Indians secured its first win of the season against New Bedford High, 2-1.

In the 12th inning, more than three hours after the first pitch, Colin McCabe’s triple allowed Hunter Pimental to secure a run for a win. It topped off the Indians’ first point of the game, nearly two hours prior in the bottom of the third inning.

“Everyone contributed, and that’s what we preach. You keep talking to them as the game was going on, 'Don’t get down, stay up,'" Frates said.

The team’s opener, a league matchup against Bridgewater-Raynham, ended in a 9-2 loss. Frates hopes this win will serve as a turning point.

“A game like that, it’s a milestone,” Frates said. “That’s a point where, in 10 or 12 games, we may look back to.”

With mostly returning players and others stepping up from the junior varsity team, Frates is already anticipating a successful season.

“It’s a great group of kids who enjoy being around each other, and they love being at practice,” Frates said. “They work hard, and I can’t say enough about them.”

Still, he has some work to do. He’s still assessing positions, and might change some up to ensure every teammate is in the best place to be successful.

The Indians' luck did not seem to carry over into following games. The Indians faced a 10-8 loss to Dufee and a 6-4 loss to Old Colony. The team takes on Durfee again on April 21.
