After a two year win streak, the undefeated black team was finally dethroned by the purple team in the third annual Dartmouth Community Summer League basketball tournament on Sunday, Aug. 11.

This was also purple’s comeback, having been defeated in the same game last year.

Colby Sylvia, league commissioner and a member of the black team, said though it was nice to not only run the league, but win the championship for a while, he appreciated seeing another team win this year. 

In its third summer, the community league continues to grow. Sylvia said this year, there were 16 teams with up to 10 people and the league held “a lot more games.”

“It was definitely a lot more work, but I would say the end result was worth it,” he said.

He added but it wouldn’t be possible without the help of his friends, who are also some of the league founders. 

“Everybody that's in the league really buys in and helps us out, and it's a really fun thing bringing the community together,” Sylvia said. “It's just something we want to do for the future.”

He said having a place to play continues to pose a challenge for the league, but Steve Burgo, of Burgo’s Basketball Association, has provided space when he can. 

“He was very, very considerate of us, and he considers us part of the Burgo family,” Sylvia added.

He said the league provides an opportunity for everyone to get together and see one another and he especially appreciates being able to see his friends from high school.

“Everybody seems to love it, and I always hear good feedback about it, but I would just say bringing the community together is my favorite part and the best part of this whole thing.”
