Assonet man's police threats stem from house call

An Assonet man was charged with threatening to commit a crime after allegedly threatening Dartmouth Police via Facebook, but court documents suggest the animosity stems from a house call made two years prior.

Freetown Police arrested Justin Alves, 28, of 93 Narrows Road, on June 1 with two Dartmouth warrants, the most recent being for threatening a police officer. Alves sent three private, F-bomb-ridden messages to the Dartmouth Police Department's Facebook page on May 22 and 23 before being blocked from the page, according to court documents.

"Literally the worst department in the 508. Two Christmas (sic) ago you came to my house my mother was sectioned. And in a trying time, your officers literally were cracking jokes," Alves wrote to police, according to court documents.

Alves and his mother lived in Dartmouth at the time of the house call. "Sectioned" refers to an order for evaluation of mental status by a doctor, explained Detective Kyle Costa via phone.

But it was Alves' escalated response to being blocked that led to his arrest.

"I proclaimed a negative comment about the Dartmouth Police. Now my account is shut down to every post linking them. ... Watch for the red dot on your heads," Alves then wrote on his own page, according to court documents.

Alves continued on his page: "George, your [sic] number one on my list [tractor emoji] take that badge off."

Costa — who manages the department's Facebook page, investigated the incident, and filed the complaint — determined that "George" was a reference to Officer Jorge Silva. Silva had responded to Avles' residence the night that his mother needed medical/physiological assistance, according to court documents. Silva was also previously friends with Avles' brother, Trevor Alves, according to the documents.

"In a day and age where police officers are targets of violence, we take all threats very seriously. I'm very proud of how our Detective Division reacted so quickly to this incident," said Acting Chief Brian Levesque in a news release.

According to court documents, Alves' father has a license to carry firearms and owns several rifles and handguns.

Alves was arrested through a cooperative effort between Freetown and Dartmouth police, according to a news release. The first warrant was related to motor vehicle offenses, said Costa.

Alves was charged with threatening to commit a crime in New Bedford District Court on June 2. A pretrial hearing will be held on July 25.

Alves declined comment when reached by Dartmouth Week reporters.
