Bishop Stang continues on in playoff season

The Bishop Stang Spartans once again dribbled their way to a win after defeating the Wareham Vikings in the Div. 3 South quarter finals on March 3.

After rescheduling the game due to weather, the No. 2 Spartans took on the No. 10 Vikings at Taunton High School in front of a packed crowd, but the Spartans didn’t get off to the start they were hoping for in the first half.

In the first quarter, the Spartans edged the Vikings by only one point. The second quarter saw the team trail the Vikings and end the first half with 28 points to Wareham’s 34.

Captain Malik Morris said the team’s rough start is from players not being cohesive with each other.

“We’ve got to work on energy off the jump,” Morris said. “We’ve got to play together as a team right from the beginning.”

Head Coach Colbey Santos used the halftime break to reignite his team.

“I just told them to relax,” Santos said. “You could tell with their body language and everything. They were just so tight, we just got to go back to having fun. Once these guys are laughing, having fun, they can play.”

The Spartans rallied to tie the game and eventually took the lead in the second half. Although the Vikings fought hard for a comeback in the final quarter, Bishop Stang kept their edge. The final score was 72-59.

Damien Perry led the team with 28 points. He was followed by Malik Morris who had 18. Samuel Gordon and Dijuaun Chumack both scored 11.

Morris said he plans on celebrating the win with a video game tournament with his teammates at his house. He also noted Wareham had a good season and he was sad to see them out of playoffs.

Bishop Stang will take on the No. 3 Burke Bulldogs for the Div. 3 South semi-finals on March 6.
