Bishop Stang field hockey co-captain leads team to Eastern Athletic Conference title win
From start to finish, Bishop Stang High School’s field hockey senior day was one for the books.
The States-qualified team took a few minutes before their game to celebrate the seniors on the team before going on to win their game against Martha’s Vineyard and the Eastern Athletic Conference title.
Senior Jacquelyn Legendre of Westport was one of seven seniors honored.
Legendre, 17, has Bishop Stang field hockey in her blood. A co-captain of the Stang Spartans field hockey team, she has been giving her all to the sport for eight years. On the afternoon of Oct. 20, it all paid off in a big way.
“The group of girls that you play with are not only your teammates, they’re your best friends and they’re with you forever. The bonds that we make are unbreakable and it goes beyond the sport,” Legendre said.
Legendre has been fortunate enough to have made the same lasting ties that her mom before her.
“I’ve been playing since fifth grade. My mom played field hockey when she was my age at Stang,” Legendre said. “My mom, she made [some of] the greatest friendships here and she made so many connections in life and she just wanted the same for me.”
Though she’s very focused on improving her game and correcting little mistakes that sneak in even after years of playing competitively, Legendre’s first concern is always her team and how she can be better so they can all be better together.
“Every game, I try to learn from the previous mistakes I made and, as a team, we just try to win and put in our full effort,” Legendre said. “We work hard at practice and we want that to translate in our game.”
Bishop Stang’s field hockey team is a huge point of pride for the school, with a standing of 11-3-1, 6-2 EAC. They’ve already qualified for states and, after winning their 2-0 win against Martha’s Vineyard, they clinched the Eastern Athletic Conference title.
The Spartans' first goal was scored by sophomore Lauren Mauretti and the second by sophomore Bailee Clements to lock down their win.
“We’ve improved so much since the beginning of the year, I’m really excited for what the future holds for this team,” said first-year head coach Eleanor Taylor.
With three games remaining in their regular season, the Spartans hope to improve their standing and redeem themselves against the Dartmouth Indians on Thursday.
