Bishop Stang grads get words of encouragement

Jun 1, 2015

The 169 seniors at Bishop Stang High School have moved on, but not without getting some final words of encouragement.

At Sunday’s commencement ceremony in a packed auditorium at the school, several speakers reflected on the past four years while looking forward to the challenges that face the 53rd graduating class.

Valedictorian Mary Carroll said she and her classmates had become a family in their four years at the school, and asked that they stay focused as they move ahead.

“After today, we are moving forward into uncharted territory,” said Carroll. “We cannot lose sight of our overall goal . . . Developing meaningful relationships should be a focus for our entire lives. Above all, show love in everything you do.”

“We made it,” said Salutatorian Theresa Gallagher, adding that her time at Stang had taught her and her classmates how to think and act like Christians.

She also thanked the faculty and staff at the school.

“The love and joy in which they served others has inspired us and built the beautiful, loving atmosphere here at Bishop Stang,” she said.

“They have touched our lives as a class,” said Father Richard Roy, “ and they will be missed.”

Principal Peter Shaughnessy asked that the students continue to practice their faith as they move forward with their lives.

Commencement speaker was former New Bedford Mayor Fred Kalisz -- a Bishop Stang alumnus and parent of 2015 graduate Ricky Kalisz. He said his first time ever speaking in public had taken place on the very stage on which students were receiving their diplomas.

“My courses here at Stang gave me the opportunity to take on challenges later in life,” he said. “Remember to stay in contact with your friends and be sure to become active and in contact with the alumni.”
