Bliss Corner social club gets liquor license, despite neighbor opposition

The Portuguese American Social Club will continue serving alcohol at its Bliss Corner building, despite opposition from neighbors who say the venue is too loud and rowdy for a residential neighborhood.

At the January 6 Select Board meeting, members unanimously approved the club’s request for a liquor license.

The club had previously held a liquor license since at least 2013. It had recently lapsed, and the club had applied for a new one.

After six current club members spoke in favor of the application, two neighbors raised concerns about the noise generated by the club and concerns they had with pollution, traffic, and drunk patrons loitering outside.

Simao Pacheco, who lives directly across the street from the 26 Columbus Street clubhouse, said he is bothered by noise late into the night, and has had to call the police on several occasions to make complaints.

He also said large groups of motorcycles revved their engines and sped down the street, and patrons frequently loiter and drink outside of the building.

Another neighbor said the people hanging out in front of the building use loud, vulgar language, and that there was traffic issues from overflowing parking lots.

Club President David Fels said in recent years the club has been working to improve its image. He said the building has been remodeled and repainted and the parking lots are being swept.

“We’re really trying to improve our appearance for the community at large,” Fels said. “We see it as a community center.”

An attorney representing the club said the club does plan to meet with neighbors in January to discuss concerns the neighbors have with the operation, and see what changes could be made.

The Select Board approved the license, but made it clear they would like to see both sides work out their issues.

After the vote to approve the liquor license, member Shawn McDonald suggested ensuring the officers and directors reach out to neighbors, hold a meeting, and report the results back to the town including any actions which will be taken.
