Boys tennis team still finding its groove
Despite a few recent losses, Dartmouth High's tennis Head Coach Don York is confident his team is on the right track.
Facing league rival Barnstable on May 4, the match came down to the last singles round of the day. Sophomore Trevor Schwarzmann took on Barnstable’s Max Francis, considered the best senior tennis player in the state. Despite winning his first set, Schwarzmann wasn’t able to keep up, which resulted in Dartmouth's 3-2 loss.
The loss brings the Indians’ total season record to 5-3, and 1-1 among the team's league opponents, but York didn't see it as a hit.
“This is the best result we’ve had against Barnstable in many years,” he said.York had a different reaction to the 3-2 loss to Brockton on May 1.
“The Brockton loss was really defeating. It didn’t feel like we should have lost, but we did,” York said.
York's yearly goal of making state is still promising, despite having mostly sophomores in his 22-student team.
“We have to get over .500, and being a math teacher, I think the chances of that are pretty good,” he said.
He plans to keep positions set, but might shift the lineups depending on the opponents, he said. York also plans to work with players on an individual level, and to develop newer players who haven’t seen much varsity action.
The team took a 3-2 win against Bishop Stang on May 8. They're scheduled to reface Brockton on May 10 at 4 p.m.
