Brick in the hall: Dartmouth High School Athletic Hall of Fame gets a boost
Due to a lack of funds, the Dartmouth High School Athletic Hall of Fame hasn’t inducted any new members since 2011. Outgoing Interim Superintendent Mike Shea and others would like to change that.
On Monday night, the School Committee approved a proposal from Shea, acting as a representative of the Athletic Hall of Fame, for the sale of commemorative “memory bricks” to be displayed outside of Dartmouth High School. The bricks can be devoted to individuals and entities associated with Dartmouth Public Schools.
“I would like permission to try to do this for students, alumni, faculty and members of the community,” said Shea, who said he and Athletic Director Jeffrey Caron had worked on the proposal together.
The hall, which was established in 1989, operated for its first six years consecutively, but since then, ceremonies have been intermittent.
Shea said the bricks could be purchased for close to $20 a brick depending on how many were ordered and would be sold for $50 apiece.
He said he had agreed to co-chair the Hall of Fame Committee until next spring, thus continuing his commitment to the district past his last day as interim superintendent on June 30.
Shea said the program had been used successfully at Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School, his former employer, although the location of the bricks, which are placed in the ground, allowed them to be susceptible to sand and salt during the winter.
He said the bricks would be put in the ground near the entrance of Dartmouth High School out of the way of traffic as to avoid corrosion from residue from snow removal.
“Nothing's going to eat away with sand, salt and all that,” said Shea.
Shea has plans to meet with the Hall of Fame Committee Tuesday night to further discuss the plan.
The School Committee unanimously approved Shea’s proposal.
