UMass Dartmouth professor Mwalim and son The ZYG 808 will be performing Bronx Jazz, a show with storytelling, hip-hop and jazz, at a virtual event on Sept. 9.

Bronx Jazz is a performance by the father-son duo on the rich traditions of native and Black storytelling and music which have inspired their own creative work.

The event, held by Boston-based radio station WGBH and Plymouth-based African-American publisher Thirty-Three Pages, will take place via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

It incorporates excerpts from author, musician, and playwright Mwalim’s recently published novel, “Land of the Black Squirrels,” with music from The ZYG 808’s album BoOMBAPJAZz and original compositions by Mwalim.

Mwalim is a multi-award-winning musician and writer who is a three-time recipient of the New England Urban Music Award for jazz, as well as six Grammy nominations for The GroovaLottos album, “Ask Yo Mama,” for which he wrote the music and co-produced. He is a tenured professor of English and Black Studies at UMass Dartmouth. His son, The ZYG 808 is a 2-time Grammy nominated hip-hop and jazz artist.

The performance will be set in and streamed from Mwalim’s new studio and content creation company Polyphonic Studio in Buzzard’s Bay.

The event is free. Registration is required.
