Build bluebird boxes with wildlife sanctuary

Feb 21, 2017

Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary has several programs scheduled for the upcoming bluebird nesting season.

Allens Pond's Stone Barn property is a common nesting spot for bluebirds, according to Property Manager Lauren Miller-Donnelly. The property features desired nesting properties, including open habitats, areas with low grass, and a mix of perches from fence posts, tree branches and power lines. The property includes about 70 bluebird boxes, although they are used by other bird species as well.

To help out, its Junior Bird Club meeting on February 21 will build bluebird boxes for nesting. The club will install the nests at its next meeting on March 21 from 6-7 p.m.

The sanctuary also invites the public to a free bluebird box building program on March 5 from 1-3 p.m. The event will also feature discussion on cavity-nesting species and what can be done to help them.

All events are at the Stone Barn, located at 786 Horseneck Road.

Registration for these programs is required. For more information or to register for these programs, call (508) 636-2437 or visit massaudubon.org.
