Building Commissioner Joe Braga to resign
Building Commissioner Joseph Braga plans to resign, announced Town Administrator Shawn MacInnes at the Oct. 2 Select Board meeting.
Braga will vacate the position on Oct. 27, MacInnes said. Braga was confirmed as building commissioner in Jan. 2021.
“It’s unfortunate, I think Joe has done an excellent job here, I think he’s really brought the town to a new level with the permitting system and the coordination of that system,” MacInnes said. “He will be sorely missed, but we will certainly start the search for a new building commissioner soon.”
Select Board Chair David Tatelbaum said MacInnes’s announcement was “new news,” and Select Board member Shawn McDonald called the news “dissapointing.”
Before Dartmouh, Braga worked as the deputy building commissioner in Brookline and the local inspector in Lowell. In 2021, Braga took over for former building commissioner David Riquinha.
Building commissioners ensure that construction complies with the town’s codes and regulations including building and design standards, parking requirements, and building material specifications.
The building commissioner also oversees inspections to ensure all buildings meet code.
Earlier in the Oct. 2 meeting, Select Board members criticized the Building Department while reviewing the results of a customer service survey on the town’s website. The department was singled out as receiving multiple negative reviews from residents, and MacInnes said all town departments would be receiving customer service guidance.
