Cancellations, parking ban issued ahead of winter storm

Dartmouth is expected to face a winter storm and high winds on Tuesday, March 14.

According to the National Weather Service, residents can expect heavy snow, with eight to 12 inches of accumulation, between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Travelers should expect visibility of a quarter mile or less, and snow covered roads, according to the weather service. Snow could change to sleet and rain by Tuesday afternoon.

Northeast winds will remain steadily between 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts blowing up to 60 miles per hour. The high wind warning will remain in effect from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Residents should prepare for downed trees and limbs, along with scattered power outages, according to the National Weather Service.

Dartmouth Public Schools will be closed on March 14 due to the storm. Friends Academy and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth students can continue enjoying spring break.

Town Hall will be closed on March 14, and voter registration extended to March 16 because of the snow.

A parking ban will be in effect from 6 a.m. on March 14 through 6 a.m. the following day. During the ban, no parking is allowed on the hydrant side of town streets. On streets with no fire hydrants, parking is only allowed on the side of the street with even house numbers.

All solid waste and recycling collection for the week will be delayed by one day, starting on March 14, according to the town website.

The storm is likely to affect much of Southeast Massachusetts and southern Rhode Island, including New Bedford, Fall River, Mattapoisett, Plymouth, Taunton, Brockton, East Greenwich, Warwick, West Warwick, Bristol, Narragansett, Westerly, and Newport, according to the weather service.
