Costumed camelids, haunted house at Hill Crest Alpacas Halloween

Costumes weren’t just for kids on Saturday as both children and alpacas got dressed up for a Halloween party at Hill Crest Alpacas in North Dartmouth.

Families played lawn games, painted pictures, ate pizza, took photos and walked through a haunted house in a farm shed at the first annual event.

“It’s very fun, very cute,” said Alyssa Oliveira of Dartmouth, who was feeding the animals with her daughter, five-year-old Analiese Avila.

“She also likes the little haunted house,” Oliveira added with a smile.

Kelly Michalski, daughter of the farm owners, noted that her family and friends spent a while dressing up all of the alpacas for the occasion. “Some of them didn’t like the hats,” she laughed.

Most of the animals were wearing bandannas, scarves, wings, and multicolored tutus around their necks, chomping happily on hay and treats.

The farm was also decorated with pumpkins, spiders, and other creepy crawlies for the holiday.

“It’s going awesome,” Michalski said. “I just like seeing the kids happy. That’s why we do this.”

“It’s a gorgeous day today,” agreed helper John Nogueira of Dartmouth, who was dressed as Buzz Lightyear to give candy to the kids. “The weather turned out to be really good.”

Four-year-old Cole Turgeon of New Bedford said he loved feeding the alpacas. “I like the color white, and she is white,” he said, indicating his favorite, which was dressed as a unicorn.

Turgeon himself was dressed up as an orca. “It’s actually the biggest kind of dolphin in the world,” he said matter-of-factly.

“He’s an animal lover,” his mom Meaghan said with a smile.

“I definitely want an alpaca now,” laughed Brittany Gonsalves, also of New Bedford. “I need more alpacas in my life. They’re adorable.”
