‘It was like shoveling wet cement’: Crews rescue South Dartmouth cow from the mud
Tallulah the cow had what her rescue farm in South Dartmouth described as “quite the day” on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Stuck in the mud, responders from Dartmouth Fire District 2, the Department of Public Works and Bristol County Tech Rescue team worked together to free the approximately 1,200 pound cow.
“It was like shoveling wet cement,” Here Forever Farm said on Facebook. “There were over 20 men here helping! They were all so careful digging out around her to free her and that was no easy task.”
Fire District 2 Chief Erick Turcotte commended the work of the Bristol County Tech Rescue Team, who he noted have a specialty for rescuing large animals.
“It was normally a pond that’s there, but with the overly dry season we’ve had, it dried up completely,” he said, adding he guesses the cow went looking for a drink and wound up stuck in the mud.
“It’s extremely rare that this happens in our area,” Turcotte said, highlighting there hasn’t been any similar instances since before his time.
“She was able to recover and walked off on her own into the field,” he said.
The farm, which is located on Potomska Road, said, “I am happy to say the old gal is doing very well. Words are a poor substitute. Thank you all so much – it takes special people to do what you did!”
