Council on Aging spreading awareness over coffee

Dec 13, 2019

The Council on Aging is hitting the road to get the word out about its programming and services through a “100 Cups of Coffee” initiative.

The initiative, which was launched last year, involves Council on Aging administrative staff and volunteers hosting informal meet-and-greets over coffee with businesses in the community, and the public.

On December 12, the COA added Farm and Coast’s Mimi Powell to its list of 100 Cups of Coffee recipients.

Joined by a crowd of more than a dozen curious residents, Council on Aging Director Amy DiPietro, Activity Coordinator Nancy Miller, and several volunteers shared many of the activities offered at the 628 Dartmouth Street Senior Center and beyond.

The mission is two-fold: Getting the word out about the organization’s mission and programming, and shattering the stereotype of the “senior” center as a place for only older people.

DiPietro said the idea is to bring information and awareness to people who might not otherwise come to the Senior Center by bringing the center’s mission into the community. In addition, the 100 Cups of Coffee initiative with businesses, DiPietro hopes, will create a network of referrals by local businesses who routinely interact with the public.

During the event, staff distributed the Center’s monthly newsletter, which includes everything from iPhone tutoring to exercise programs and film screenings.

“It’s getting out in the community and having coffee with people so we can let people know what they offer,” Miller added.

The next 100 Cups of Coffee has not yet been scheduled. Stay tuned to the Council on Aging’s newsletters and communications for more information.
