Cross country teams facing different challenges this year
Dartmouth High’s boys and girls cross country teams are currently in the midst of two very different seasons.
The 27-member boys team is proving to be filled with strong individual performers. After the team’s most recent meet against New Bedford, it held a 4-0 record. Led by senior captains Advika Rajapakse and Greg Martin, the boys are aiming for the Old Colony League title this year, according to head coach Hilary Sousa.
Despite the early success so far this season, Sousa is concerned about the two upcoming league meets against Barnstable and Bridgewater-Raynham.
“We haven’t had our league opponents yet, Barnstable and Bridgewater-Raynham” Sousa said. “Those will be a challenge.”
For Martin, his biggest concern is making sure everyone stays healthy. With several runners either out on injury or just returning, he said it’s important to make sure everyone else stays in shape.
On the girls side, the team has been hit by the loss of a number of key seniors, including last year’s top scorers. With 15 runners, the team is now in recovery mode this season as new members, mostly freshmen who have little experience in varsity cross country, learn the sport.
“For the girls, it’s a rebuilding year for us,” Sousa said. “We lost a lot of our senior girls last year.”
The girls are led by senior Maddie Lynch. She is also the top runner, Sousa added. Lynch said she is already enjoying the challenge of stepping up and taking charge of the young team.
“It feels really great [being the captain],” Lynch said. “We have a team with a lot of hard working people. It’s great to work with them.”
Lynch added that the toughest part of being a young team is that as the season progresses, their opponents will be in better shape.
