Dartmouth 15-and-under team takes hometown tournament
The Dartmouth 15-and-under All Star team finally got a trophy, and did it at home.
In the team’s last All Star tournament appearance of the summer, the group won its division in the John B. Steele Tournament in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind victory. Dartmouth scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off with an 8-6 win over Maplewood.
Ben Aaronson kept Dartmouth in the game with a strong performance into the sixth inning, but Maplewood's Grand Slam in the bottom of the 6th put Dartmouth in a 6-2 hole with only three outs left.
"Our seven, eight, and nine hitters all reached in the top of the seventh and that's what won it for us,” said Manager Bill Kleinfeld.
Dartmouth kept the line moving in the seventh, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six in the frame on their way to an 8-6 victory.
Kleinfeld said that having a solid catcher behind the plate in Luke Tisdelle was the key to the pitching staff’s success over the course of the tournament.
"I knew we had enough hitting. The key was getting a natural catcher behind the plate. Luke was the guy settling the pitchers down. When he asked for a fastball they had the confidence to just let it fly.”
The team got off to a hot start in the tournament, winning its first two games 13-1 and 18-7 before playing Maplewood in the winner's bracket semifinal on Saturday.
The semifinal was a classic pitcher's duel as starters Nick Vallone for Dartmouth and Nick Fay for Maplewood battled for six full innings with Dartmouth scratching out a 2-0 lead going into the seventh.
After Maplewood singled to start off the inning, Andrew Kleinfeld came in to strike out the side to get the save for Dartmouth.
"Nick did a tremendous job picking us up when our bats went cold, and we managed to do enough to get him the win" said Kleinfeld.
Sunday's first was all Maplewood as the Fall River powerhouse breezed to a 7-1 win, forcing a third, winner-take-all matchup.
"Our guys were a little tired that first game" said Kleinfeld.
