Dartmouth Grange donates dictionaries to third graders

Sharon Andrade and Wendy Holmes hauled four boxes through the front doors of Potter Elementary and into the cafeteria. On a silver cart, they unloaded 67 Webster dictionaries.

The shipment was one of three stops for Dartmouth Grange members this week. Between DeMello, Quinn, and Potter schools, the Grange had donated 265 books. Annually, the Grange provides every third grader, third-grade teacher, and classroom library with dictionaries.

"I feel happy that they want to donate to us," said student Andrew Moniz. "I love to read. If I come to any words I don't know, I can look them up in a dictionary."

Students said they use the books to not only look up definitions, but also for spelling.

"The last word I had to look up was 'number' because I forgot how to spell 'number,'" said Analysse Rodrigues.

Teacher Jen Oliver said it's a great contribution because students then have the resources they need at their fingertips.

Holmes, a relatively new Grange member, said that the organization votes yearly on whether or not to do the fundraiser.

"We have to take into consideration the technology, but this year, we feel it's still very positive for the kids," she said.

The Grange also organizes four scholarships for Dartmouth and Westport high schoolers every year. A male and female student from each school are granted up to $2,000 each, said Andrade.
