Dartmouth Grange hulas into the holidays with ukulele concert
What a way to say “Aloha” to the holiday season.
The Dartmouth Grange Hall held its annual holiday concert on Tuesday, Dec. 6 featuring the quirky stylings of the Unlikely Strummers, a community-based ukulele group from around the South Coast and Rhode Island.
The Strummers performed Christmas classics like “Jingle Bells,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and “Santa Baby,” as well as a few lesser-known numbers, like “Mele Kalikimaka.”
Sam Manley, President of the Dartmouth Grange, said that the yearly Christmas-time tradition has always been free and open to the public, as a gift to the community.
“It’s kind of our way of thanking everyone for their support throughout the year,” he said. “It’s just something that we think is important to give back and get people into the Grange Hall.”
The show was attended by dozens of people young and old, who clapped and cheered enthusiastically after each song.
Manley said that the Grange has hosted a variety of performers over the years including a handbell choir and a chamber orchestra, but has returned to the Unlikely Strummers in recent years for the light-hearted and interactive shows.
“We try to mix it up,” he said. “But this is nice because it’s got lots of community involvement.”
