Dartmouth High girls lacrosse win first round of Div. 2 tournament

Dartmouth High School’s girls lacrosse team took its first step towards winning the Maritime League Championship on May 31.

The Indians (16-1) scored their first six points within the first five minutes of the game against the Medway Marauders (9-10) in the Division 2 East tournament. Leading 10-3 at halftime, the Indians’ momentum plateaued. Medway steadily racked up points, but the Indians took the game at 11-15 to advance to the quarter final round of the Maritime championship tournament.

“We just have to put the two halves together,” said head coach Chris Tresca, who was pleased with the girls’ performances but would like to see more consistency throughout the game.

This being his first year with the Indians, Tresca knew there would be an adjustment period, but as the “outsider” in the equation, he commended the tight-knit group’s hard work and passion.

Dartmouth started the season with a loss to Tresca’s former team, Old Rochester Regional, but defeated the Bulldogs in a rematch and have gone undefeated since.

Dartmouth seniors Jen Wheaton and Grace Gamache co-captained together, and have been together both on and off the field since the third grade. Though they are excited to close out their senior year with an impressive season, they said their game record means nothing on the field.

“It’s nice to have in the back of your mind but when you step onto the field, the score is 0-0,” Wheaton said.

“When you’re playing well and you’re playing hard, it all pays off,” Gamache said.

Assistant coach Cary Isaacs, also in his first year with the Indians, was blown away by the players’ dedication.

“They play as a team. That’s when we’re at our strongest,” Isaacs said.

Dartmouth will face the Foxboro Warriors on their turf on Friday, June 3 at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will proceed to the semi-final.

Other teams still in the quarter-final include Wayland Warriors, Dover Sherborn Raiders, Walpole Rebels, North Attleboro Rocketeers, Medfield Warriors, and Watertown Raiders.
