Dartmouth law enforcement participating in No Shave November

Nov 12, 2019

Members of several law enforcement agencies in Dartmouth are growing out their beards to raise money for several different causes during “No Shave November.”

The Dartmouth Police Department is once again participating in “No Shave November,” but there is a new goal for this annual fundraiser.

This year, the department is growing out its beards to raise money for Blue H.E.L.P. to honor the service of law enforcement officers who have died by suicide.

The Auburn-based non-profit was established in 2017, after its organizers realized that suicide prevention and care for families afterward is not usually offered in law enforcement.

The organization is planning a camp for children who have lost a law enforcement parent to suicide in June 2020 in Sandwich, as one of the first of its kind events in the nation to focus on the emotional health of the families left behind.

In a post on the department’s Facebook page, officials noted the topic is close to the hearts of officers in Dartmouth. Last year, the department lost one if its detectives, William "Wally" Garcia, due to suicide.

The UMass Dartmouth Police Department is also participating in No Shave November. The department is raising money to raise funds for cancer awareness.

This year, the department is donating all of the funds it collects to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, Fight Colorectal Cancer and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Members of the Bristol County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 Unit are also growing their beards for a cause. Officers are raising money to help children in foster care during the holiday season.

Funds raised will be donated to the Justice Resource Institute Foster Care and Adoption in Berkley, MA. To donate, send a message to the department on Facebook or email info@bcso-ma.org.
