Dartmouth Police receive complaints of telephone scammers
The Dartmouth Police Department has been receiving complaints about a telephone scam.
According to Detective Kyle Costa, the public information officer at the Dartmouth Police Department, the callers identify themselves as representatives of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The victims of these calls are told by the caller that they owe back taxes in varying amounts and that failure to pay will result in arrest.
The caller then requests that the amount due be paid in full by way of credit card. In addition to possessing the victim’s telephone number, in some cases, the caller will be able to provide the victim’s address, date of birth and the last four digits of their social security number, police said.
The Dartmouth Police Department urges anyone who receives a similar call not to provide any information to the caller, to end the call immediately and to file a report with the telephone provider and the police department.
