Dartmouth resident takes home bronze at SkillsUSA state championship
Dartmouth’s Elizabeth Santos, who is a junior in the diesel services technology program at Greater New Bedford Regional Technical High School, won third place and a bronze medal in the diesel equipment technology competition at the SkillsUSA Mass State Championship Friday, April 26.
The competition, which was held this year at the Advantage Truck Group in Shrewsbury, is held annually for SkillsUSA. SkillsUSA is a program that teaches kids work-based skills with nationwide programs, events and competitions. This is the fourth year that ATG has hosted and managed the diesel equipment technology competition for SkillsUSA Massachusetts.
Santos, who is in the school’s cooperative education program at the maintenance facility at Sandpiper Air at New Bedford Regional Airport, plans to study aviation maintenance technology after high school.
“I love everything about the diesel program, from the hands-on skills to working as part of a team, but the problem-solving aspect really drew me in,” Santos said. “I learn something new every day and get a sense of accomplishment when something I fix is working again.”
Santos was one of 12 students to earn a spot to compete based on results from online qualifying rounds.
During the event, students tested their knowledge of tools, precision measurement, vehicle components and job interview skills and challenged their skills at workstations that included tasks related to engine diagnostics, electrical systems, brakes, tires, air systems and more.
Advantage Truck Group President and CEO Kevin Homes said his company is “proud to help support opportunities for students interested in this career.”
He added, “There’s a need for diesel technicians across Massachusetts, and SkillsUSA is an important part of technical education that helps build the employment pipeline for trucking and other diesel industries.”
