Dartmouth woman celebrated as "Unsung Heroine"
A Dartmouth native has been recognized by the state recently, for her contributions to the community.
The Massachusetts Commission on The Status of Women celebrated 150 women—who were nominated by state legislators for valuable contributions to their organizations and communities—at their thirteenth annual Unsung Heroine Awards of Massachusetts on June 22. Among the nominees was Dartmouth's Dr. Eileen T. Marland.
Unsung Heroines are individuals who do not often make the news, but through their dedication, leadership and volunteerism, they often make a difference in people’s lives. As a member of the Atlantic Aviators, Marland was nominated by Representative Christopher Markey for helping raise more than $165,000 to build a playground accessible to handicapped children.
As a catalyst for the Atlantic Aviators, Marland also brought NASA Astronaut Dr. Jessica Meir to speak to the Dartmouth Middle School and Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School students about careers in science and space.
Each year the Commission gathers nominations from across the state for women who make outstanding contributions to their communities. The Honorees are nominated by state legislators, although community input is important.
