Dartmouth woman pleads guilty to elder abuse, larceny
A 65-year-old Dartmouth woman has pleaded guilty to abusing and stealing from her dementia-ridden ex-husband.
Patricia Jackson of 315 Cross Road served as power of attorney for her ex-spouse Lester Jackson, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis, depression, and hypothyroidism, according to court documents. Due to his dementia, Lester was living at the Atria Assisted Living Facility in Fairhaven, when Jackson started defaulting on his rent and medical bills, according to an October arrest report.
On June 18, 2015, Atria staff members reported neglect. Jackson had accrued $25,000 in unpaid rent for her ex-husband, who was subsequently evicted from Atria and left homeless. Additionally, an outstanding $1,600 pharmacy bill caused Apothacare Pharmacy to stop delivering his medications, according to the report.
Atria staff were unable to reach Jackson, nor did she respond to the eviction notice. It wasn’t until a protective order went into effect on Lester’s finances that Jackson reached out. She said she was using his income—a monthly total of $3,646.33 from Social Security and the Veterans Association that was enough to cover his healthcare expenses—to pay his credit card debt with Chase and Sears, along with household bills, according to court documents.
Furthermore, Jackson owed $12,000 for services rendered by Louisa Martins, who provided additional care during Lester’s advanced stages of dementia, according to the arrest report.
Jackson received 18 months probation for her guilty pleas to elder abuse and to larceny by a single scheme in excess of $250, and paid $15,000 to Martins.
