Dartmouth's O'Connor gets first hole-in-one, nets brand new Kia at Fourball
Paul O’Connor’s first ever hole-in-one won him a car.
On Monday, O’Connor, a member of the Dartmouth High School Athletic Hall of Fame, holed-out a 180-yard shot on the seventh hole at the Country Club of New Bedford’s 85th Annual Fourball tournament.
“I’ve never even been close,” said O’Connor, whose shot helped him and partner Todd DeCosta narrowly defeat Jeff and Kyle Stickley. “It was lucky.”
For his ace, O’Connor won a 2016 Kia Optima from Kia of Dartmouth.
At the event known as “America’s Oldest Fourball,” teams of two from around the area consisting of one member and one guest compete for one the area’s most prestigious titles.
O’Connor credited his partner for selecting the “three rescue” club used for his eagle.
“He wanted to hit something else,” said DeCosta, who O’Connor said has been his best friend for years.
O’Connor has lived in Dartmouth since 1966, and was inducted into the Dartmouth High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 for his outstanding contributions in football and basketball. Dartmouth High’s website describes him as “a gamer” who’s become an avid golfer in more recent years.
“He’s a tremendous athlete,” said DeCosta.
Several club employees said it’s the first hole-in-one they’ve seen in recent memory during the Fourball, though later on Tuesday, member Sunny Kim holed his tee shot on the 15th hole.
Had he waited until the 17th hole, he too would have won a brand new Kia.
This was the first year the cars were offered as prizes at the event.
Other cars have been offered up by way of a hole-in-one at other tournaments there, but employee Leigh Hammontree said no one’s gotten one.
“The cars are still up for grabs, too,” she added, with the tournament going until Sunday.
And what will O’Connor do with the car?
“I don’t know — we haven’t discussed any of that yet,” he said, though DeCosta had other ideas.
“He’s going to be giving me rides around for a couple of years at the very least,” he joked.
