District 3 firefighters climb for MS

Mar 10, 2020

Six members of Dartmouth’s Fire District 3 made it to the top — of Boston’s Hancock Tower, that is.

The firefighters successfully climbed 61 flights of stairs, or 1,200 steps, for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Climb to the Top fundraiser on March 7.

And they each did it wearing about 50 pounds of gear.

“It was pretty good,” said firefighter Devin Madeira after the event.

Madeira was joined by fellow firefighters Julie Giusti, Joshua Grenier, and brothers Nick and Jacob Livesey, along with Richard Racine-Martin.

Racine-Martin is currently living with MS, a disease in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of the body’s nerves.

Together, the team raised over $1,000 for the non-profit, putting them in the top 50 fundraisers for the climb.

Although Madeira said he has done other fundraising climbs, this one was “much harder.”

“It was straight up,” he said.

Madeira was the one who decided to get District 3 involved in the annual fundraiser.

“We definitely had a good time,” he said. “I think we’re definitely gonna make this an annual event, as long as we can get the members together and take the time and do it.”

And he noted that the team recovered from the climb surprisingly quickly.

“I don't think anyone actually felt any soreness in their legs afterwards,” he said. “I don’t know how, or why.”

“You definitely felt the pain going up, there’s no question about that,” he added with a laugh.
