Fire District No. 2’s savings plan for new vehicles is going forward, but not with the full funding request.

At the district’s annual meeting on May 8, voters tackled a $785,587 budget proposal for 2018. The 2017 budget was $676,121.

The biggest request was a $100,000 appropriation to begin a vehicle replacement fund. It’s needed to replace a pumper truck, which can cost up to $650,000, said Prudential Committee Chair Ralph Medeiros. The current truck is 40 years old, he said.

Voters expressed concern over the proposal’s effect on tax rates. After discussion, they approved $70,000 for the new program, Medeiros said.

Other items in the budget included $234,382 for salaries and compensation, and $16,825 in stipends for Prudential Committee members, the district clerk and treasurer, three town assessors, town collector, and moderator.

It also included a $146,900 payment towards a 10-year loan — taken out to cover the $1.2 million station renovation that began in 2012 — and $85,200 in operational expenses.
