DNRT protects 34 acres of rare habitat near Ridge Hill Reserve
The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust has announced the successful acquisition of 34 acres of ecologically significant land directly adjacent to its Ridge Hill Reserve. Closed on June 10, the newly protected parcel is entirely designated as “Priority Habitat for Rare Species” by MassWildlife, featuring a mosaic of ecosystems, including shrub wetlands and towering pine stands.
The land also strengthens the connection to the 14,000-acre Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve, expanding vital wildlife corridors and ensuring long-term habitat preservation in the region.
The trust credited its ability to act quickly to its Pathways Land Acquisition Fund, established about a decade ago to help the organization respond swiftly to conservation opportunities. The fund, bolstered by community support, allowed DNRT to purchase the property without launching a time-consuming fundraising campaign. The effort was also supported by $65,000 in grants from private foundations.
Though the parcel abuts Ridge Hill Reserve, the trust said there are no immediate plans for new trails. A recent community survey revealed a strong preference for prioritizing land protection for ecological and agricultural value rather than recreation. The trust says it will honor that sentiment, particularly where fragile habitats are concerned.
“We’re grateful for the generous support that made this conservation success possible,” the organization shared. “Thanks to our community, this rare habitat is now protected forever.”
