Downed tree blocks Tucker Road, causes power outages

A downed tree on Tucker Road blocked traffic for most of the day on February 26, and left thousands without power.

According to police, a large tree fell in the 1200 block of Tucker Road around 7:25 a.m., bringing down two utility poles with it when the tree caught the wires. Two thousand customers initially lost power, but Eversource was able to restore power to the majority of customers within 20 minutes, said spokeswoman Rhiannon D’Angelo.

Both northbound and southbound lanes between Allen Street and Route 6 were closed while Eversource and the Department of Public Works cleaned up. Officers were on site to assist with detours until approximately 5 p.m., said police. Power was restored for the remaining customers by 2 p.m. after crews completed permanent repairs, said D’Angelo.

"We really appreciate how people were patient and worked with us throughout the day," said Detective Kyle Costa.

The tree was old and rotted at the base, which caused its collapse, he said. Costa added that because the town was able to respond relatively immediately, police were able to alert residents via social media and went cleanup smoothly.
