Dr. Peter Matthew Horan, of South Dartmouth, died after a brief illness on January 25, 2019.

He was the son of the late Dorothy Day Donaghy and Dr. Thomas Benedict Horan.

Dr. Horan graduated from Dartmouth High School in 1956, The College of the Holy Cross in 1960 and Tufts University School of Medicine in 1967. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1968.

Dr. Horan was happiest when on the ocean. He was a recreational pilot, lover of the outdoors, and energy conservationist.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Marilyn Ann Horan, son John Christopher Horan, brothers, Dr. Thomas B. Horan, Dr. Robert W. Horan, James Horan, and William Horan, as well as sisters, Jacqueline Beckmann and Nancy Stone.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Hawes, of Sarasota, FL, and his children Lisa Howe and her husband Stephen Kaufer of Newton, Kathleen Horan McLean and her husband Michael of South Dartmouth, Patricia Gelina and her husband Andrew of Lakeville, Peter Horan Jr. and his wife Kelly of Wellington, FL, and Timothy Horan and his wife Lisa of Mattapoisett.

He is also loved by his 22 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral mass was celebrated on Tuesday January 29, 2019 at St. Mary’s Church, South Dartmouth. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
