Driver severs utility pole, threatens police

Arrested after knocking down a Chase Road utility pole on Nov. 10, a New Bedford man proceeded to urinate in a trash can at the police station and present "the finger" in his mug shot, Dartmouth police report. Police had to shut down traffic and arrest the driver, Keith Avila, 34.

Avila was brought to Dartmouth Police Headquarters, where he allegedly threatened officers, hit his head against a wall, vandalized town property, and urinated in a trash can while handcuffed in the booking room before giving the camera "the finger" in his mug shot.

Avila faces a number of charges: operating under the influence of liquor, a marked lanes violation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, having an open container of liquor in a motor vehicle, intimidation of a witness, and vandalism.

Avila also allegedly violated a town bylaw by having an open container of marijuana in the car, a Subaru Impreza.

Avila said he was not injured by the crash or by banging his head, but was evaluated by Emergency Medical Services Personnel before refusing further treatment.
