Everything you need to know about the Memorial Day Parade

May 16, 2019

Dartmouth’s Memorial Day Parade celebration will start on May 27 with a ceremony at the old police station on Russells Mills Road at 9:15 a.m.

The parade will set off down Elm Street at around 9:30 a.m., stopping for another wreath-laying ceremony at the South Dartmouth cemetery before turning down Bridge Street for the final ceremony at Padanaram Bridge.

There will be no parking along the parade route, although extra parking will be available at the DYAA fields.

Vice Chair of the Dartmouth Veterans Advisory Board Norm Gunderson said that this year’s route is a reversal of the usual one.

The board planned the change due to noise disrupting the final ceremony at the end of the parade last year.

“It’s gonna cause some confusion,” Gunderson said, “but hopefully it will be quieter.”

Representatives from the Dartmouth police and fire departments will lead the parade with the grand marshal and members of the V.F.W., Marine Corps, and American Legion.

Dartmouth public school bands will also be in attendance, along with town officials, troops of historical war re-enactors, the Knights of Columbus, Girl and Boy Scout troops, various antique cars, and the Dartmouth Youth Football League cheerleaders.

Another change this year is the arrangement of transport for veterans who can’t walk but still wish to attend the parade.

They will be picked up at the Council on Aging and driven the length of the route by volunteers so that they can take part in the festivities.

Any veterans interested in being a part of the parade should get in touch with their veteran’s office as soon as possible, as space will be limited — and they will have to arrange transport to and from the Council on Aging as well.

In case of inclement weather, the parade will be cancelled — although all three ceremonies will still take place as planned.
