Former UMass student Tsarnaev sentenced to death
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of two men involved in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, has been sentenced to death by a federal grand jury for his role in the attacks.
Tsarnaev, who attended UMass at the time of the attacks, was found guilty on 30 charges in connection with the bombings and subsequent events that killed four people and injured over 260 people in all.
Tsarnaev’s defense team argued that he acted under the influence of his brother, Tamerlan, but the jury assigned to the sentencing ruled in favor of death by legal injection for six of the 30 charges.
UMass was shut down for most of the weekend in 2013 following the bombing after investigators traced the bombings back to the brothers.
It was determined that Tsarnaev was on campus following the bombing.
He lived on the third floor of the Pine Dale dormitory at the time of the incident, and investigators removed a computer and a backpack containing fireworks tubes, some of which had been emptied of their powder, from the room.
