Four things to know about your property before the first snowstorm

Dec 28, 2016

As winter weather sets in, there are some things to consider concerning where your property intersects with town property. Here are four things to know concerning parking bans, mailboxes, and shoveling.

1. Parking bans are specific to the storm. They don't run all winter long, so check the town website for updates.

2. The town will typically plow snow between the curb lines of each street. However, residents are responsible for keeping the sidewalks in front of their properties clear of snow in a reasonable amount of time.

According to town by-laws, that means within four hours after snow has stopped falling in the daytime, or before 11 a.m. the next morning if snow accumulates overnight.

3. Residents adjacent to a mailbox are responsible for keeping it clear of snow, to ensure there are no hiccups upon delivery.

Residents must also make sure that mailboxes are installed properly (check out the postal service's mailbox guidelines) and can withstand winter storms.

4. The town will only replace damaged mailboxes if a snow plow physically hits it. If this is the case, expect nothing greater than a standard USPS mailbox.

This does not apply to mailboxes damaged by snow from removal operations, nor will ornamental or non-standard mailboxes be replaced at full value.
