Free monarch tagging program for Dartmouth residents
The Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is hosting a free after school session on September 27.
The After School Insect Discovery and Monarch Tagging program is for residents of Greater New Bedford. Qualified towns are Dartmouth, Acushnet, Fairhaven, Freetown, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, and Wareham.
Families from outside the area are also welcomed to attend, but the fee is $6 per child and $8 per adult. Fees can be paid at the program start.
The program will be held 4-5:30 p.m. at the Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary field station located at 1280 Horseneck Road in Westport. The session includes looking for butterflies and other insects with an entomologist (someone who studies six-legged bugs), learning about the monarch butterfly, and learning how to catch and tag them as they make their way along the migratory route to Mexico.
