Fremont Street house fire extinguished without injury

A house fire at 26 Freemont St. in Padanaram caused damage to the roof and interior walls but no injuries to the occupants on Tuesday, March 29 as Dartmouth Fire District 1 arrived quickly to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters received a 911 call from the homeowner at 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday night and arrived on the scene to find visible flames extending from the roof. Both occupants were already outside with their dog when the first-responders arrived, according to Chief Peter Andrade.

Firefighters worked quickly to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes by coordinating their efforts between the interior and roof of the building, Andrade said. Crews remained on the scene for another hour to quench additional hotspots and overhaul the second-floor ceilings.

Andrade said that the specific cause of the fire was still under investigation and may be difficult to determine, however he said it was undoubtedly accidental and seemed to have started in the roof area.

He described the damage from the fire as “definitely fixable.”

The residents of the home, however, went to stay with relatives for the time being, the chief said.

Though no injuries were reported, one firefighter was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for overexertion and released after an examination.

District 1 was assisted at the scene by an additional Engine from District 3 and station coverage was provided by District 2.
