Friends of the Elderly and Rotary Club donate to Meals on Wheels, encourage community donations

Aug 18, 2023

The Rotary Club and Friends of the Elderly both donated to Coastline Elderly Services, a local provider of Meals on Wheels, at a dinner Aug. 17. Each group donated $400.

“It’s pretty much symbolic,” said Maria Connor, Friends of the Elderly president. “But we want to make sure that the community knows that they can donate to this program.”

The Friends and Rotary Club also want to make it clear the Meals on Wheels is in need of the money.

Justin Lees, CEO of Coastline Elderly Services, said the federal program has become underfunded over the last few years and is now experiencing deficits “in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

“We never know what kind of funding is coming from the feds,” Connor said.

Coastline provides a daily hot meal to people who are unable to leave their homes easily, and also provides a wellness check.
